Keyless Entry

In our last blog, we talked about keeping a rental property and tenants secure. The best security is to have locks rekeyed between tenants. But, sometimes tenants are merely visitors, are short term or restricted access. Or, they’re under five feet tall and call you, “Mom.” In those situations, security might be better with a keyless lock system in place. In addition to safety and convenience, keyless entry systems offer a tremendous amount of control.

Control

There are several varieties of keyless locks available to both residential and commercial customers. One type is the card key type of lock that many motels and businesses use to allow--or disallow--visitors. A card may have a magnetic stripe or a chip that signals the lock electronically, and it opens. It may be a key fob instead of a card. Key fobs are now used to unlock many of the newer cars.

Another option is a mobile access system. A mobile access system uses a control system held in the Cloud to restrict access. A user might have a card or even a cell phone to be granted access. The RFID and Bluetooth in the card or phone activate the lock.

Convenience

But, in our mind’s eye, we can see parents everywhere shaking their heads when they think about their school-age children having a card key or a cell phone. They need not worry. Another keyless option is the digital deadbolt, a keypad entry system that is easy to program and offers one-touch locking. A child who will never in a million years remember where he left his key yesterday will continue to remember the code for a keypad entry system long after he has gone from home. A family code is a secret and oddly cherished by the members for the unity it brings.

Security

The beauty of any keyless entry system is that, because a metal key isn’t required, the security is phenomenal. Keys can be lost, duplicated, and used without any record of the use for later review. A family or business that uses keys is at the mercy of those keys and corresponding locks if there is a mishap. A keyed entry is a traditional means of security, one which we can see slowly being replaced by Smarter and technologically superior security systems.

But don’t worry! If you still have a key-based lock for your entry, and that offers the security, convenience, and control you need, continue to use it in good faith unless it becomes inadequate. If that happens, give us a call! We can help with your locksmith and security needs, regardless of the system you desire.
