Is it Time for Your Business to Switch to Magnetic Locks?

If you own a commercial building, the comings and goings of employees, guests, and security personnel can create a security and logistics nightmare. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. By switching to magnetic locks, a building owner or manager can save more than just headaches. A magnetic locking system will also save time and money with a long-lasting system that makes locks obsolete and provides more control than traditional locking systems. Here are some reasons a building manager should consider a magnetic lock system.

Once you make the change, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without a magnetic lock system.

All those keys

Keys are problematic on commercial property because they can be lost, stolen, misplaced, and duplicated. These represent an untenable security threat. Rekeying and key cutting can become a burdensome expense, particularly in a large scale area with multiple entry points. If turnover is high, the cost can become astronomical.

Data

Magnetic lock usage can be recorded and stored. The value of this is indisputable, particularly in high-security areas, where being able to account for the entry and exit of individuals without having to hire a security card is a valuable tool. Security management has the option of tracking an individual or group, tracking entry and exit traffic into sensitive areas, and other useful information.

How they work

A magnetic lock operates on a low-level electronic frequency, which is interrupted by the use of a magnetic stripe card, a key fob, or an electronic keypad. Advanced systems require a pin and even a fingerprint--or can be controlled remotely via an app. It becomes quickly apparent that the options offer tremendous flexibility and control.

Costs

The cost of a magnetic system is deferred by the fact that rekeying is no longer an issue. Also, magnetic systems hold up under hard use for a long time because they have no moving parts, something that regular locks cannot boast of as freely.

Even those who have problems with magnetic locks realize these are nearly always caused by a problem with the door, such as wear, rust, or a faulty hinge, a poorly hung door, or warped frame. A regular door alignment inspection will prevent these situations.

What about demagnetized cards?

A couple of culprits can demagnetize cards. One is keeping them in proximity to other magnetized cards. Other potentially demagnetizing situations are having them in an MRI room, a magnet on a wallet or pocket, the security tag deactivator in a retail store (at the checkout), and scratches to the magnetic strip by keys and other sharp objects.  There are ways to avoid this, such as using a credit card holder to keep magnetic cards facing the same direction to avoid potential inflictions or scratches.
