Transponder Keys and Why They Cost So Much

Though the technology used in the transponder keys was first developed during World War II, it was only in the 90s that the transponder keys for vehicles came into being to solve the increasing car thefts during that time. Almost all cars that have been on the road post-1995 come with a transponder key. Not only with car locks, but locksmiths also use the technology for wireless home security systems and operating gates or garage doors with remote controls. But what exactly is a transponder key, and what technology does it use to make it a safer choice for vehicles?

A transponder key comes with an inbuilt chip or a radio frequency identification transmitter (RFID) to transmit low-level signals that are detected by the receiver (located near the ignition switch) to start the engine. The chip comes pre-programmed with a unique serial number by the manufacturer, and the car will not mobilize unless it recognizes or validates that serial number. These keys are used to lock, unlock, and start vehicles, and each of the keys is programmed uniquely for a particular car only, eliminating the possibility of theft. If anytime a thief attempts to break-in to the vehicle using a different key, it will trigger an alarm. These keys make it impossible for car thieves to access the automobile without its original key and have rendered the traditional hot-wiring method of stealing the cars ineffective.

Why is replacing a transponder key an expensive affair?

Earlier, replacing a damaged or lost car key or getting a duplicate one used to be hassle-free and affordable. With transponder keys, it is always advisable to have an extra set of keys, as replacing the sole key can cost hundreds of dollars, depending on the vehicle model. If you have lost the chip key, or it has stopped working, and you are looking for a replacement, either contact the dealer or a trusted and reputed locksmith. The price may also vary depending on the vehicle location and the time of service. The locksmith may charge more for the service provided out of the working hour.

The higher costs are due to the requirement of special machines and skills to program the key. First, the key will have to be cut accurately and programmed with the vehicle's unique code to respond to it. However, it is good to go to a locksmith for replacement instead of the car dealer as the dealer charges more for the same service. The locksmith can even send a technician to wherever you are stuck to program the key, while with the dealer, there will be extra cost involved to tow the car to the dealer's location. The best way to avoid hassles and cut the replacement cost is to have a spare key around.

Do some research to find a trained and licensed local locksmith, and always keep the number on speed dial for emergency services. They will offer on the spot cutting and programming of the transponder key.
