Tips to Burglar-proof Windows and Glass Doors at Home

Protecting a home from theft is crucial via the locks and security installed throughout. According to ADT's Protect Your Home Website, nearly 25% of break-ins occur via the home's windows, and 22% via a back or sliding door. Over the next few paragraphs, we'll discuss how to secure the windows and glass doors of a home and keep your valuables safe inside.

Add security locks

Depending on the home, windows may or may not come equipped with security locks. To lock out unwanted activity, add security locking features to windows. Some standard window security measures include latches, hinge wedge locks, pin locks, ventilation locks, and more and can usually be added to the existing window.

Another option to keep intruders from accessing the home via a sliding window or door is to add a beam, dowel stick, or panel to the track when closed so they can't be slid open from the outside.

Tint windows

While there are plenty of unknown reasons a burglar may find a specific house on their looting radar, one of the critical components is they see something inside they want. Try tinting windows to deter visibility inside the home. Home window security tinting acts as a one-way film that allows you to see out but blocks the outside view.

Window film tinting may not always be within the budget or the effect a homeowner desires. Burglars can also be led away by keeping shades drawn at night and while not at home and not leaving valuables in plain sight.

Invest in shades or shutters

Fortunately, shade and shutter options are versatile to security and design preferences. You don't have to sacrifice safety for style in the case of window shades. Check out these rolling shutters that bring both style and security to a home.

Reinforce the glass

Window glass reinforcement consists of using layers of glass security film to fortify the strength of the window. While less common than some of the other tips we've mentioned, this approach is a great way to make windows and doors more secure.

For additional security, consider installing plexiglass window panes. This type of window is made of petroleum-based and acrylic composite materials and is considered more shatter-resistant than regular glass.

Get an alarm system

With window security alarms, you'll be notified when someone or something enters through a window right away. The alarm can be tied to your central alarm system and provides additional peace of mind if someone is still set on a break-in. Light and motion sensors are also a great way to monitor the home's security and alert a homeowner when they have an intruder.

Put security bars in place

Place window security bars on the windows' interior or exterior and minimize the access a thief has to a home. These bars should be made of durable and solid material and tend to have a wide range of shapes, designs, and sizes to fit any house. Window bars deter break-ins a couple of ways. First, they make it much harder for someone to enter, and secondly, they decrease visibility into the home.

Burglar-proofing windows and sliding doors throughout a home is crucial to home security. Home security requires many different measures to prevent break-ins. Installing a security camera is a great way to deter robberies and the tips provided above.
