Tips for Seniors Who are Isolating

COVID-19 has made an everyday life near impossible for many of the people who are self-isolating and following CDC and state-mandated guidelines. Often members of the community that get overlooked when deciding on how to stay protected at home are our seniors. With seniors being the most at-risk by the coronavirus, it makes sense to find a way to stay healthy and safe at home, but at what cost?

Even the healthiest of senior citizens can face security risks when living on their own or self-isolating. Here are some helpful tips on how to maximize security for seniors living alone or self-isolating at home.

Get a medical alert system

A medical alert system is a straightforward and easy way to alert medical professionals if a senior at home falls or has any serious injury. The security device is wireless and can be used from anywhere throughout the home. If assistance is needed, they can use the wireless to get help if they are unable to get to the phone. Medical alert systems tell emergency officials to come immediately and ensure peace of mind for the person at home and their loved ones who cannot be with them during this time. For those who don’t want a medical alert system, an Apple Watch can also provide this service.

Invest in a home security camera

Elderly individuals that live alone should install a security camera at their homes. Security cameras keep potential theft at bay, but it allows family members to check in remotely. Thieves tend to target senior citizens more often than other individuals. A home security system will help monitor the home and reduce the risk of theft or injury to your senior family member. Even a Ring doorbell adds security for about $30 per year.

Install an alarm system

Security cameras can help keep watch on what’s going on within and outside the home, but installing a professional burglar alarm system will alert police if someone tries to break into a home. A senior should be versed in setting and unsetting the alarm and steps to take in case of a break-in.

Additionally, some added home security features could be having all doors and windows fully locked when not at home, and installing a peephole at the front door, so the person at-home can see who is at the door before opening it.

Replace locks to accommodate their needs

People at home may need additional accessibility options that go beyond safety and security. Replacing old locks with new ones that are easier to operate, like switching out knobs with lever handles, can help make the home easier to access for your loved one.  Ask them what might be useful and consider changing the current locks and door handles with new, more functional options in case it hinders their ability to move freely about the house. Doing so can also limit the risk of injury or unnecessary overexertion while at home. Contact a trusted locksmith to see what options are available for your loved one’s home.

Worrying about a senior family member living at home while trying to stay safe and healthy is inevitable. Hopefully, these practical tips will help you keep seniors secure and safe when they are isolating at home alone.
